Group 3 - An interview with Hampus Jakobsson of Tat

Right, hi again Hampus - thanks again for the nice lecture! I was wondering how you came to the conclusion that you wanted to come and talk to us students - did someone contact you, or were you just interested? Maybe both?

Hampus:
Petter Mellander is a friend of mine and he asked me to come, in combination with that I often found students at HI to pose good questions.

Carl-Oscar:
During the lecture you were talking a lot about what has happened, or what we need to look at in the future industry as creative minds. However I’d really like to know what you are looking for? For example; Is there a trend which really excites you atm?

Hampus:
The new interaction possibilities that are coming between people, technology, and people - things like gesture recognition, augmented reality, and voice recognition. This together with good designers will create amazing experiences in the future.

Right now I am also quite hooked on the trend of game mechanics (who isn’t) and dedicated devices.

Carl-Oscar:
Before the lecture started, we mentioned integrated application in our mobile phones browsers e.g. that we mirror todays computer browsers, so in all facts that in the future todays mobile applications would be dead. What do you think about this?

Hampus:
I think to get a good experience a native user interface is needed and either web will improve (5-10 years) or become more of a data repository and the native UI will rule. There are still too many problems with latency in the experience and not optimal structure. Native will trump web in quality and performance, but web is better at device independence and development environment in that it is fairly easy to learn. I think both will co-exist at least 5 more years.

Carl-Oscar:
How does Tat use the open source community? Do you use specific developer forums, or what medias do you use? Do you recommend the Mobile Application team to use the open source community? If so - what site?

Hampus:
We use some OSS but the different projects should all be seen as tools. If you need a good graph database there might be NeoTech, if you’re in to big data there is another. So search and you will find :)

Carl-Oscar:
Where is Tat in 5 years? What goals do you have as a company?

Hampus:
To still have fun, develop and provide great value to the world. I don’t really believe in more specific level goals in that time span.

Carl-Oscar:
What kind of people are you looking to hire? Do you ever stop recruiting, or do you always look for new innovative talent?

Hampus:
We always look for bright people - designers as well as programmers. Project managers are also welcome :)

Carl-Oscar:
Thank you for your time - Hampus

Hampus:
Thank you.

We would like to thank hampus for his help in making this interview happen! Remember ladies and gents to check out TAT - The Astonishing Tribe, maybe your looking for something that they got?

Over and out,
